What Is Considered a Disability?

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) define disability as a physical or mental impairment that affects how an individual performs various everyday activities. Conditions may impact how someone interacts with the world around them or how they retain and recall information.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) considers individuals disabled if a physical or cognitive condition prevents them from carrying out standard work-related activities, including standing or sitting for long periods of time, for at least 12 months.

Disabilities requiring more intensive care fall into the following groups:

  • Physical disabilities that affect mobility, including wheelchair use, arthritis, chronic fatigue, diabetes, epilepsy or surviving a stroke.
  • Sensory disabilities that influence how individuals relate to their surroundings. Conditions include blindness and hearing loss.
  • Intellectual and cognitive disabilities that affect how individuals communicate, learn new skills and recollect information. Conditions include autism, Down syndrome, dementia, Parkinson’s disease and brain injuries.
  • Mental disabilities that affect emotional state and related behaviors. Examples include mood disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

How We Support Individuals with Disabilities

Avon Health Center creates a comfortable and nurturing environment for all residents. We encourage independence and maintaining connections with friends and loved ones.

Based on a resident’s condition, our staff can provide the following services:

  • Assistance with ADLs: Activities of daily living, such as dressing, bathing, toileting and monitoring nutrition.
  • Therapy and Medical Care: From stroke recovery to routine care, our medical staff monitors the health of all residents. We can administer medications, develop physical and occupational therapy plans, perform wound care and select medical procedures.
  • Adjusting Care: We routinely assess each resident to ensure we’re delivering the care and assistance they need to remain active. Based on these observations, we adjust therapeutic interventions and medical care, provide appropriate support and create environments that foster a sense of community.
  • Targeted Accommodations: We provide safe, engaging spaces and activities for residents with physical disabilities. Our facility features clearly marked curbs, stairs and flooring, as well as braille, large-print signs, closed-captioned TVs and therapists well-versed in disability accommodations and therapies.
